DESCRIPTION: The red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) is a medium sized raptor that is 16 to 18 inches in length and has roughly a 40-inch wingspan.

The Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) is a resident of most of the eastern half of the United States as well as along the coast of California.

Red-shouldered hawks are opportunistic predators. They will eat whatever they can catch, including rodents, frogs, reptiles and even, other birds!

Status Rare transient, very rare in summer. Occurrences recorded by Blakiston and Bland (1856), Downs (1865), H.F. Tufts (1899) and Townsend (1906) all lack supporting evidence.

Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) is a long winged, long tailed hawk. The Buteos are different from the Accipiters by the heavy build and broad wings. Although its flight is similar which is a glide preceded by several quick wing beats.

Red-shouldered Hawk is similar in adult plumage but has reddish shoulders, a pale crescent in the wings, lacks the distinct black border to the trailing edge of the wing, and the white bands on the tail are much narrower than the black bands.

The Red-shouldered Hawk is widespread in the eastern United States and less common in the western United States. This species occurs regularly throughout most of Georgia, except in extreme northeastern mountainous areas.

The Red-shouldered Hawk is rather common in South Florida and co-operative about posing for pictures.

The Fulvous Owl is a midsize owl, 15 - 17 inches in length (about the size of a Red-shouldered Hawk). It is nocturnal (active mostly at night), has a very bold call, and can often be heard vocalizing before dawn.
