Red-tailed hawk pairs mate for life. Both the male and female build a nest of sticks high in a tree or on a cliff. The same nest may be used year after year. The female lays two to three eggs and incubates them for about 30 days.
Red-tailed Hawks range from rare (winter) to common (summer) in the Weaselhead/Glenmore area, where at least one nesting pair is found nearly every year. Look for them soaring over the meadows of the valley floor and less frequently over the delta.

Red-tailed hawks, like other buteos, expend less energy in their hunting than accipiters. They soar above or will scan fields from a perch in a tree or from a fence post, and then move in for the kill.
Red-tailed hawks nest from February to June. The female lays one to four eggs, which take 28 to 32 days to hatch. The young, which are raised by both parents, are covered with white down for the first week, until feathers begin to grow.
