RED ADMIRAL
The Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) is a common migratory butterfly found in marshy north temperate regions of Asia, Europe and North America. It is a fast flier. Its caterpillar lives only on nettles. Classification: Family Nymphalidae.

Look for red admirals throughout the continental United States, with a few migrating as far north as Alaska. They like woodland edges, farms, parks, gardens, meadows, streams and fields.

Red admirals are widespread yet “less than common'. You can come across a red admiral anywhere at anytime within Canterbury. Red admirals have been sighted at Prices Valley, Orton Bradley Park and Ahuriri Valley.

Unusual this far at sea, a few American Ladies and possibly one Red Admiral passed the boat at the trap site. A half dozen or so Harbor Porpoise and one Minke Whale in the distance were the only marine mammals seen.

These butterflies are closely related to the viceroys (Limenitis archippus) and the Red admiral (Vanessa atalanta).

What is a Desert?

They can be quite a menace to butterflies visiting the flowers on buddleia bushes and are in no way deterred by the so-called 'warning' colours of eye-marked peacocks and flashing red admirals.
