The Red Panda is a cat-sized species of carnivorous mammal that is found inhabiting the temperate mountain forests on the slopes of the Himalayas.

The Zoo introduced its newest member, a male red panda, Tate, to Shama, the Zoo's female red panda on February 6, 2009. Tate recently arrived from the Cape May Zoo in New Jersey.

Red Pandas are arboreal; they spend most of their time in trees. They sleep curled up on a branch. The red panda is crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk. Their calls include short whistles, squeaks, snorts, and hisses.

The red panda is a cousin of the raccoon, while the more famous giant panda is more closely related to bears. These engaging animals make their home in mountain forests and bamboo thickets, where they live in small groups or alone.
Red pandas eat mostly bamboo, but they do also eat acorns, berries, blossoms, lichens and sometimes eggs. They have a small bone that acts like a thumb, helping them grip the bamboo stalks as they eat.
Red pandas are called by many names including lesser panda, hun-ho, wah, and red cat bear. Besides your local zoo the red panda in nature is often found in the bamboo forests of Nepal, Burma, Bhutan, Tibet and Yunnan provinces in western China.
Red pandas were once thought to be closely related to the giant panda, but genetics has shown they are more closely allied with the raccoon and weasel families.

For many years, it was believed to be a type of racoon, like the similarly named red panda. However, genetics testing and observation have revealed that the panda is in fact, a bear. It has several adaptations that make it unusual.
The kinkajou belongs to the raccoon family and is directly related to the red panda that lives in the Himalayas and China, the olingo, the civet or ring-tailed cat and cacomistle, which are New World residents.
And as used in the West it was originally applied to the Red panda, to which the Giant panda was thought to be related.
