The largest of Madagascar's remaining lemurs, red ruffed lemurs are one of two species of ruffed lemurs, the other being the black-and-white ruffed lemur.

History of Distribution:
Ruffed lemurs are confined to eastern rain forest regions of Madagascar and appear to be uncommon to rare throughout their range.

While we out on a (successful) search for red ruffed lemurs, I noticed the telltale eye bulges of this frog watching us warily from a pool in a stream. This is one of the larger Mantidactylus species.
