Northern Red Salamander (Pseudotriton r. ruber)
Adult Northern Red Salamanders are stout-bodied, reach about 6 inches in length, and have a short, fleshy tail.

Black-Chinned Red Salamander (Pseudotriton ruber schencki)
DESCRIPTION: 2 3/4 - 4 3/4 inches. A red salamander with a strong concentration of black pigments under the chin. The tail is spotted almost all the way to tip.

18. Red Salamander - Pseudotriton ruber
Description: 4 - 6 ¼" (10-16 cm). Completely red to coral colored stout species. Dorsum heavily speckled with black spots. Adults become more brownish/purplish in color. 16-17 costal grooves.

Northern Red Salamander

Short tail and usually 16 costal grooves. Bright orange to red with lots of dark, irregular spots. Older animals darker with many spots fused together. Belly red with dark dots.

The Southern Red Salamander, Pseudotriton ruber vioscai, is found near small, clear streams in the panhandle. It is white-flecked bright red to purplish brown and reaches a length of 6.5".

Mud salamanders are often difficult to distinguish from red salamanders, Pseudotriton ruber. Mud salamanders have brown eyes and blunter, shorter snouts while red salamanders have gold or yellowish eyes and slightly longer snouts.
