The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is the smallest tree squirrel in its range and occurs across most of Canada as well as Alaska and much of the western regions of the lower 48 states.

Mammal. Solitary animals, red squirrels scold intruders in their territory. They growl, screech, chirp, rattle, and buzz. Active during the day, they spend the warmer months preparing for winter by finding and hiding food.
Red Squirrels mate in early spring, producing two to seven naked, blind helpless young some 35 to 38 days later. They normally mate again in late June with a second brood born by early August. The first brood is usually reared in a tree cavity.
Red squirrels mate in late winter. They nest in hollow trees or build a 12- to 19-inch ball-shaped nest in a tree top using leaves, twigs and bark. In early spring, females have two to five babies which are born hairless and weigh less than an ounce.
The Red Squirrel was first reported by Erxleben, 1777. In general members of this order are found all over the world, except for Antarctica. The largest living rodent weighs around 50 kilograms or 110 pounds, and this is called the capybara.
The red squirrel is most active in the early morning and the late afternoon. It is a solitary animal, except for mothers and their young.

Until the 1940s the red squirrel was quite widespread. It has now disappeared from large areas of Britain and its place has been taken by the grey squirrel.
