Miscellaneous: The redbelly turtle is listed as threatened by the World Conservation Union. Competition from the more aggressive, introduced red-eared sliders in other parts of their range have contributed to their decline.

27. Redbelly Turtle - Pseudemys rubriventris
Description: 9 7/16 - 13 ¾" (24 - 35 cm). Large pond turtle. Carapace dark brown to black. Plastron is reddish to orange/yellow. Color fades with age until uniformly dull brown to black.

Distinguishing this species from the closely related Florida cooter (Pseudemys floridana) and redbelly turtle (Pseudemys rubriventris), as well as the yellowbelly slider (Trachemys scripta) can be difficult.

Formerly listed as "Plymouth Redbelly Turtle" (Pseudemys rubriventris bangsii). Recorded from Plymouth County. Listed as "Endangered" by Massachusetts and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
