or redbird, common name for a North American songbird of the family Fringillidae (New World finch family). In the eastern cardinal, Richmondena cardinalis, the male is bright scarlet with black throat and face; the female is brown with patches of red.

 


The red cardinal bird is also known by its other names like North cardinal, common cardinal and redbird etc. It is so named because of its brilliant red colored body.
The male redbird is slightly larger than its female counterpart.

Most people's knowledge of cardinals begins and ends with the real redbird. The Northern Cardinal is literally the cardinal of cardinals.

Cardinals, also called "redbirds," do not migrate and have traditionally been more common in warmer climes such as the U.S. southeast.
