Reedbuck live either alone or in pairs. Sometimes large herds occur during the winter months. They prefer to lie in grass or reed beds in the heat of the day and feed during cooler hours of sunrise and sunset, or sometimes even at night.

During mornings and early evenings, packs search together within their home range for antelopes (duiker, reedbuck, impala, and Thomson's gazelle), as well as larger wildebeest and the occasional zebra, particularly if these prey are ill or injured.

The dominant prey of the wild dog is Thomson's gazelle, wildebeest, impala, duiker and reedbuck. At the Zoo, wild dogs are fed a base diet that includes a commercial raw meat mix which contains the nutrients essential for the animal's well being.

With several strictly territorial species eg white rhinoceros, blesbok, water buck, sable antelope, gems buck, reedbuck, and tsessebe, there needs to be a minimum of three adult males in new populations or herd.
