Different reindeer varieties have been developed in Asia to suit local conditions and human needs, including transportation. Chukchis have a breed that appears to be the product of longer domestication than most.

Caribou (Rangifer tarandus), also known commonly as reindeer, are members of the deer family that inhabit boreal forests and tundra of North America, Siberia, and Europe.

Ontario: Star reindeer lichen (Cladonia alpestris), reindeer lichen (C. rangiferina and Cladonia spp.), and spineless reindeer lichen (C. mitis)- rich forests serve as late winter habitat for woodland caribou [116].

Caribou and reindeer are the same species. They are the only deer whose males and females both have antlers. The antlers grow forward and the caribou use them in the winter to dig through snow for food.

Large ungulate prey species include reindeer, roe deer, wild sheep, elk or red deer, maral and moose. Wolverines can be very swift when on the attack, reaching speeds of over 48 km an hour.

Food

It is the smallest of the caribou/reindeer subspecies, reaching a shoulder height of only about 90 cm (3 ft.). A large bull will weigh about 110 kg (240 lb.). A cow weighs approximately 10 to 20% less.
