What Are Herptiles?
Reptiles and amphibians are collectively known as herptiles.
Herptiles are ectothermic which means they cannot regulate their body temperatures.

Reptiles are vertebrates of the taxonomic class Reptilia including animals such as snakes and lizards (order Squamata), turtles and tortoises (order Testudines), and crocodilians (order Crocodilia).

Of the four living groups of reptiles, only one, the snakes and lizards is represented in Britain. Unlike amphibians, reptiles have no larval forms.

Reptiles are seldom encountered at most flatwoods sites. The only species captured consistently is Thamnophis sirtalis, but even it is usually uncommon.

To reptile enthusiasts, this is the king of the rattlesnakes. This dangerously venomous snake is usually rather slow moving, but can hurry along if it chooses. It often crawls slowly in a straight line (rectilinear movement).
