Description
The Resplendent Quetzal is a member of the trogon bird family. It has a green iridescent body and red breast. The tail has long coverts that hide the tail. In breeding males, these form long streamers.

3/29/04 - Finca Lérida, Chiriqui. The grandest, most elegant of all the trogons. Adult males have punk hairdos, fiery-red bellies, and spectacular two foot long trains.
Resplendent quetzal pairs use their powerful beaks to hollow hole nests in rotted trees or stumps. Inside, they take turns incubating two or three eggs-though males have such long tails that they sometimes stick outside the nest.

I have seen flocks of Resplendent Quetzals a couple of times at Cerro de la Muerte in Costa Rica. They are easy to see there in the springtime but I really never gave it a thought that there might be other types of quetzals.
The Resplendent Quetzal is also commonly known as the Guatemalan Quetzal and is not only the nation's national symbol, but the currency used in Guatemala is actually known as the "quetzal".
