RHINOCEROS, the designation for such perissodactyle (odd-toed) ungulate mammals as carry one or more horns on the head, and their extinct relatives (see Perissodactyla).

 


Rhinoceros Vipers use long fangs, potent venom and powerful jaw muscles to kill their prey. The venom of this snake is hematoxic and can be deadly. Its venom is both heotoxic and neurotoxic.

Rhinoceros Species
Two of the five rhinoceros species are African and three Asian. The African species have two horns, one behind the other, and their skins are gray and smooth rather than folded.

The White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is also known as the Square-lipped Rhinoceros. The latter name is really more appropriate since this animal is not white at all.

Rhinoceros are herbivores and mostly eat grasses. They use their prehensile upper lip to twist around the grass clumps and pull off large mouthfuls. They occasionally browse on leaves and shrubs, but their main diet is grass.

The rhinoceros's single horn, usually about 35 cm (14 in.) long, is made of compressed hair. It is not used for defence. Rather, the rhinoceros defends itself with the two long canine teeth in its lower jaw, with which it can make horrible gashes.

The name rhinoceros comes from the Greek words for "nose-horn" (rhino-ceros). Rhinoceroses are the only mammals with horns on their noses rather than on top of their heads.

Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis)

The black rhinoceros is classified as a member of the order Perissodactyla (Odd-Toed Hoofed Mammals) and is a member of the family Rhinocerotidae.

Rhinoceros Hornbill: Its biological name is 'buceros rhinoceros'. It has white beak with red and orange shades, black wings and black and white tail. It is the largest bird of this species.

We lucked upon a pair of black rhinoceros also (one is mostly hidden behind bushes on the right). They took one look at us and dashed away, unlike the white rhinos that had strolled by apparently oblivious to our presence.

They are, however, more closely related to zebras, donkeys, horses and rhinoceros. All of these animals fall into the order Perissodactyla, or odd-toed ungulates (ungulates meaning "having hooves").
