Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus)
Description The Ringtail is a cat-sized carnivore resembling a small fox with a long raccoonlike tail. Its bushy tail is flattened and nearly as long as the head and body, with alternating black and white rings.

The ringtail possum is an agile, arboreal (tree-dwelling) marsupial that lives in rainforests and coastal temperate deciduous forests in eastern and southwestern Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea.

" Ringtail Possums have adjusted to living amongst people very well. They are so good at getting used to routine that if you have them in your yard and start feeding them they will come down at the same time each night.

Ringtails are not actually cats, but related to the raccoon. They are cat-sized animals though, with a fox-like face and elongated body. They are mostly yellowish to dark brown with a whitish underside. Its large eyes are ringed with white fur.

The Common Ringtail Possum is well known to many Sydney residents. Together with the Common Brushtail Possum, it has adapted well to living in close association with humans and is often seen in suburban gardens at night.

Ringtail Bassariscus astutus. Accidental. Known only from two animals collected in Chambers and Montgomery Counties that may have been released from captivity. No evidence of a breeding population in Alabama or adjacent states.

This springtail clearly shows its jumping device, after which it and all its relatives are named.

Ringtails defend resources but are not strictly territorial. Ranges can be 15 to 60 acres, depending on the type of habitat and thus the available resources.

The main prey items are medium-sized arboreal marsupials, particularly the Greater Glider, Common Ringtail Possum and Sugar Glider. There may be marked regional differences in the prey taken by Powerful Owls.

Using NIRS equations developed from feeding trials with captive greater gliders and common ringtails we are able to make direct estimates of the nutritional value of individual eucalypt trees as well as whole eucalypt forests.

The Procyonidae family consists of the raccoon, the coati, and the ringtail. A common characteristic of members in this family is the rings on their tails. Members of this family range in size from that of a housecat to about the size of a small dog.
