Roadrunners are curious, funny birds. The sound that roadrunners make is interesting too - they bend over and puff up their chest, then make a sort of cooing sound like a mourning dove.

The Roadrunner (called Geococcyx californiana by scientists) is a bird about 20 to 25 inches long--but almost half of this length is made up of its tail feathers. It weighs about 7 ounces, making it fairly light for its size.
The Roadrunner or Ground Cuckoo, Geococcyx californianus, is a bird that lives in thorny scrub, sparse grasslands, and deserts of Mexico and the southwestern USA. The Roadrunner can run at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour (24 km per hour).

The Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) is a resident bird across most of the American southwest as well as much of Mexico. Perhaps no other bird species is as familiar to the general public as is the roadrunner.
Roadrunner species generally range in size from 18-24 inches in length from tail to beak. The roadrunner is large, slender, black-brown and white streaked ground bird with a distinctive head crest.
Roadrunners live to the ripe old age of 7 or 8.

As some of you know, I take some pride in avoiding shots of captive birds, nesting birds (excepting those taken at a good distance), and birds on feeders or other artificial structures.
The bellow-billed cuckoo's closest relative is the roadrunner. Feathers account for almost half of the yellow-billed cuckoo's body weight. Coccyz is Greek for a "cuckoo" and americanus is the Latin form meaning "of America.
Not only the Cactus Wren but the House Finch, Roadrunner, and Mockingbird, among others, recognize that cacti deter predators and select cacti for nest sites when possible.
