Rock Doves (also known as feral pigeons) are tame birds that are natives of Eurasia. These social birds now live all over the world, thriving in cities. Peregrine falcons and hawks prey upon them. These birds make a cooing sound.

Rock doves are exempt from the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) of 1918, which was passed for the protection of migratory birds. Their nests, eggs, young, and/or adults may be removed or destroyed at any time. No permit is required.

Throwbacks among modern domestic pigeons indicate a common ancestor, the rock dove. This tendency is clearly seen in street pigeons in cities everywhere.

Probably few persons realize that the various fancy forms of pigeons, such as the pouter and the carrier, are all descendants of a single species, the Rock Dove. The changed forms have been produced by artificial selection.

The Rock Dove is superficially similar but never has a purplish head and neck with a scaly, green hindneck and white bar. The Band-tailed Pigeon also has a distinctive black-tipped yellow bill and has a terminal band paler than the rest of the tail.

In the summer of 2001 I had a first - feeding on spilled grain 20 yards from our garden gate I saw a mixed flock with every species of British dove: Turtledove, stock dove, rock dove, wood pigeon and collared dove.
