Bird. An adult male chicken is called a “rooster' and an adult female is called a “hen.' Roosters are larger, usually more brightly colored, and have larger combs on top of their heads compared to hens.

The rooster is actually a male chicken. Usually there is only one rooster for every 10-15 chickens raised on farms or captivity.

Roosters make a very loud crowing sound usually very early in the morning but they can crow anytime of the day. Their loud shrill is a territorial sign to other roosters. They can also be quite aggressive birds.

Roosters weigh 3.5-4.5kg (8-10lb) and hens 3-4kg (6.5-8.5lb). Faverolle bantams are exact replicas of their large fowl counterparts. Males weigh 1130-1360g (40-48oz) and females 910-1130g (32-40oz).

Roosters will crow (produce a shrill call) to alert other males about their territory. Hens will cluck after laying an egg and also use this vocalization to gather their chicks.

The red junglefowl rooster is said to be more brilliantly colored that its tame relative. During June to October, G. gallus moults into an eclipse plumage.

They will regularly bow-ride, and send up a 'rooster-tail' of spray when they surface.

Hens will lay eggs regardless of whether there is a rooster around or not. A rooster is necessary to obtain fertilized eggs that will develop into chicks. The majority of eggs that are purchased at the market are unfertilized.

The superb lyrebird, about the size of a rooster, is brown above and ash below. It has a long, pointed bill, a longish neck, and large, strong legs and feet with which it runs swiftly. The Albert's lyrebird is smaller.

Chickens are best kept in small families of one rooster with two or three hens. Minor fighting among the males starts at an early age, and while it looks fierce, it does not usually result in injuries.

Courting: When a rooster finds food he may call the other chickens to eat it first. He does this by clucking in a high pitch as well as picking up and dropping the food.

Before clocks were widely used, many people relied on roosters to wake them up in the morning.
A rooster's morning greeting-cock-a-doodle-doo in English-is chicchirichí in Italian, ko-ke-kok-ko-o in Japanese, and 'o'o'o in Mandarin Chinese.

Color: Males (called cocks or roosters) have mostly reddish-orange body feathers, greenish black heads with a red eye patch and white neck rings. They also have a sharp spur on each leg. Females are mottled brown.

They also say that keeping a rooster is good, as they like to kill and eat centipedes. For me, I make sure that I keep all drains in the house covered at all times when not in use (this works very well).

The colourful male with a 40 - 45 cm long tapered tail, a rooster-like bill and spurred tarsus is a striking bird. The white ring around the neck varies in depth and is sometimes lacking.

The two species, the superb lyre bird, which is about the size of a rooster, brown feathers above and ash below. Its bill is long and pointed, a longish neck, and large, strong legs and feet with which it runs swiftly .

In many parts of the United States the common pheasant is seen as the premier upland game bird. Some states derive significant revenue from pheasant hunting. In most states only roosters can be legally hunted.

This porpoise was named after William H. Dall, who was the first to identify the species. Scientists can identify a group of Dall's porpoises by the characteristic 'roosters tail' splash created when the porpoises swim at high speeds.
