Status Fairly common in summer, very rare in winter. Breeds. In some years birds arrive in numbers during the second half of April, in other years not until May (average 1 May, earliest 12 April).

Rose-breasted Grosbeak: With bold patterns in rose, white, and black, the male can be identified quite easily. However, the female, which is striped and drab, is more difficult to do so, resembling a larger version of the finch or sparrow.

Rose-breasted Grosbeak Pheucticus ludovicianus. Common in spring and fall, and occasional in winter in mostly Gulf Coast region. Found in woodlands, especially in the canopy.

It is considerably bigger than its North American congeners, the Black-headed Grosbeak and the Rose-breasted Grosbeak, being about 21.5-24 cm (8.5-9.5 in) long and weighing on average 62 g (2.2 oz).

The male rose-breasted grosbeak (Zamelodia ludoviciana) is striking with its white bill and summer plumage of black and white accented by a rose-red breast. Sometimes called potato-bug bird, it destroys these and other insects.

3/31/04 - near Cabaņas Burbayar, Panama/San Blas border. We saw many of "our" birds in Panama, heading on their way up north from their wintering grounds.

Winter plumage is difficult and your bird may be a first year making it even tougher. How about a rose-breasted grosbeak first year male in winter plumage? It has a black stripe mid-way down the underside of the tail. P.

The adult female has black and white crown stripes, buffy underparts with streaking at the sides. She is very similar to the female Rose-breasted Grosbeak but has buffier breast and the streaking is confined to the sides.

Some cardinaline grosbeaks are entirely tropical. In North America
the best-known species are the rose-breasted grosbeak, of the east,
and its western counterpart, the black-headed grosbeak.

With really good luck, you may see a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, a Lazuli Bunting, an American Goldfinch or a Little Blue Heron.
