Ruffed Lemur
Mammal. Black and white ruffed lemurs are tree dwelling primates and the largest of all lemurs. They live in groups of two to five individuals. Unlike many other species, females are larger and dominant over males.

Ruffed lemurs are confined to eastern rain forest regions of Madagascar and appear to be uncommon to rare throughout their range. The Antainambalana River in northeastern Madagascar separates the ranges of the two subspecies.
Ruffed lemurs usually weigh 7-10 lbs (318-454 kg) as adults.
Conservation Status
On the 2011 IUCN Red List for Threatened Species, the black and white ruffed lemur is listed as Endangered.
Ruffed lemurs are quadrupedal, using all their limbs for locomotion. Their long tails allow for even better stability in the trees. In fact, most hang upside down, holding on by their feet, when feeding!

Ruffed lemurs are the largest of the lemurs -- about the size of a large house cat. The body is nearly two feet long from head to rump, with a tail equally as long.
The Ruffed lemur is the largest of the true lemurs, measuring when full grown, four feet in length including the long tail of about two feet. The fur is long and soft, and the ears are hidden by a ruff of hair.

This endangered lemur species lives only in northeastern Madagascar. It eats fruit, nectar, leaves, and seeds, helping to pollinate flowers when it feeds on nectar and spreads pollen that has stuck to its long nose.

Red-ruffed lemurs are able to pursue sitting birds of prey as well as some terrestrial carnivores in order to distract them from a lemur nest near by.
