About Saiga The Siaga belongs to a group of hoofed mammals called goat-antelope. They live in places where the winter is very cold. It is a strange looking animal with sandy colored fur, downward pointing nostrils and a swollen muzzle.
The sheep-like saiga, Saiga tatarica, of the Kirghiz steppes stands apart from all other antelopes by its curiously puffed and trunk-like nose, which can be wrinkled up when the animal is feeding and has the nostrils opening downwards.
At the same time, poachers have reduced the Kazakhstani wolf's main prey species, the saiga antelope, from 1.5 million to perhaps 150,000, selling horns to the Chinese, who use it in traditional medicine.
Native to India are the nilgai or blue bull, the four horned antelope and black buck, the saiga lives on the other steppes of South Russia and in the Central and West Asia, and the chiru in Tibet .
Some antelopes include the gazelle, eland, impala, springbok, klipspringer, oryx, saiga, waterbuck, suni, hartebeests, topi, nyala, bongo, dik-dik, kob, duiker, gemsbok, etc. They are hunted by lions, leopards, wild dogs, and other predators.
