Salmon sharks mate during summer and autumn and give birth in the spring. Like other shark species, the male shark grasps the female by biting her while he inserts a clasper into the cloaca.

SALMON SHARK
The Salmon shark (Lamna ditropis, also known as the Pacific Porbeagle) is named for its favorite meal - salmon. This shark is found in the Bering Sea and off western North America. It lives from the surface down to moderate depths.

Salmon Shark, Lamna ditropis
- Is said to eat commercial fish (salmon). Relatively common in B.C. in the Straight of Georgia and offshore.
Brown Cat Shark, Apristurus brunneus
- Found in southern B.C.
There was also a group of Salmon Sharks around the boat at one time. This was the first time I had seen this species.
Orcas At Last
We saw three Orcas on this trip. Here a Mother with calf .
The most distinguishing characteristic of the porbeagle is a white patch on the trailing edge of the dorsal fin. This distinguishes it from both the salmon shark and the great white shark.
In most ecosystems the halibut is near the top of the marine food chain. In the North Pacific the only common predators on halibut are the sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus), the orca whale (Orcinus orca), and the salmon shark (Lamna ditropis).
