The Sambar Deer, Cervus unicolor, is an introduced species found in wetlands on St. Vincent Island in Franklin County. It is much larger than the native white-tailed deer, reaching a length of 78-102".

The sambar is a close relative of the elk. they live in woodlands, and often on mountain slopes. It has a dark brown coat and unusually thick antlers with two or three branches.

Also known to attack sloth bear, dogs, leopards, crocodiles and pythons as well as monkeys and hares. Old and injured tigers have been known to attack humans and domestic cattle.

Tigers eat mostly sambar, chital, Red deer, Swamp deer, Rusa deer, and Wild pigs. Occasionally, however, they will kill a rhino or elephant calf. About one in ten or twenty attempts to catch prey is successful.

In India, Dholes prey on Sambar, Chital, swamp deer, nilgai, blackbuck, gaur, wild pigs, ground dwelling birds and rodents. Chital make up the majority of their diet.

Bengal tigers hunt medium-sized and large-sized animals, such as wild boar (an omnivorous mammal), sambar (a kind of deer), barasingha (a kind of deer), chital (a spotted deer), nilgai (an antelope), gaur (a large ox of South Asia) and water buffalo.

Komodo dragons ambush their prey; typically boar, water buffalo, and Sambar deer, and inflict a crippling, infectious bite. Then, using their long forked tongue to smell, they track their prey, which usually dies of infection within a few days.

Diet: Tigers prey primarily on wild boar (Sus scrofa) and other swine, and medium to large deer such as chital (Axis axis), red deer (Cervus elaphus), and sambar (C. unicolor).

In the deer family (Cervidae), only the larger moose (Alces alces), which is called an "elk" in Europe, and the sambar (Rusa unicolor) rival the elk in size.

forelimbs, massive and heavily muscled, are used to hold tightly onto the prey and to avoid being dislodged, especially by large prey such as gaurs. A single tremendous blow of the paw can kill a full-grown wolf or heavily injure a 150 kg Sambar deer.
