Sand eel
Sand eel or sandeel is the common name used for a considerable number of species of fish. Most of them are sea fish of the genera Hyperoplus (greater sandeels), Gymnammodytes or Ammodytes.

Sand eels or sand lances are the preferred prey in many areas. Like other seal species, gray seals also consume seabirds occasionally. Gray seals typically dive to about 30-70 m while feeding.

Common Murre: Feeds on polar cod, capelin, sprat, sand eels, small Atlantic cod, and herring; also eats marine worms, amphipods, shrimp, and mollusks.

Minke whales feed on krill; fish, including sand lace, sand eel, salmon, capelin, mackerel, cod, coal fish, whiting, sprat, wolffish, dogfish, pollack, haddock, and herring; and squid. Capelin are the dominant food item of North Atlantic minkes.

Anglers use a variety of plugs, sand eel type jigs, and squid- or mackerel-like lures. Pogies, mackerel or eels are good live baits and cut bait works too. Average size is 3-5 pounds.

Heading north, we were on the lookout for the Bluefin Tuna fleet - which almost always follows the humpback whales since the tuna eat the same fish (sand eels) as the humpbacks.

It feeds on fish which are mainly caught by surface diving after the bird has spotted its prey by swimming around with its head under water. Like the Puffin Fratercula arctica, it holds fish such as sand eels crosswise in its bill.

Their numbers are also being threatened by pollution and climate changes like El Nino. Commercial fishing has also depleted the favourite food for puffins which include sand eels and whitebait.

They steer with rudderlike webbed feet and can dive to depths of 200 feet (61 meters), though they usually stay underwater for only 20 or 30 seconds. Puffins typically hunt small fish like herring or sand eels.

Mackerel can be caught with artificial baits such as coloured feathered hooks (mackerel feathers), weighted jigs and a variety of bright flashy spoons and various natural baits such as sand eels, sea worms, squid and Atlantic silversides.
