Sand tiger sharks are known to gulp air to increase their buoyancy. They feed primarily on fishes. It is known, for at least one species, Caracharias taurus, that they hunt in groups.

There is no placenta to nourish the pups. The pups are cannibalistic; they eat any unfertilized eggs and their siblings. Very few pups in a litter survive until birth. Sand Tiger sharks are oviphagous.
