Damalisk - name for African antelopes of the genus Damaliscus, closely related to the hartebeest.

 


English name is Sassaby - tsessebe comes from 19th Century Tswana
The unusual, funny-looking tsessebe lays claim to being one of Africa's fastest antelope.

The last section of the true antelopes is the Bubalinae, represented by the hartebeest, Bubalis, blesbok and sassaby (Damaliscus), and the gnu or wildebeest (Connochaetes, also called Catoblepas), ...

However, this antelope has many other monikers, including (but not limited to) sassaby, tsessebe, korrigum, and tiang. Damalis (Greek) a young cow, a heifer; -iscus (L) diminutive suffix.
