Scalloped Hammerhead
Sphyrna lewini
The scalloped hammerhead shark has the distinctive "hammer" shaped protrudences common to the hammerhead shark family. Its name comes from a deep indentation in the center of the "hammer".

Scalloped Hammerhead Shark Sphyrna lewini
Along with the seven other known species of hammerhead sharks, the scalloped hammerhead has a strange, flattened, T-shaped head.

Scalloped hammerheads, Sphyrna lewini, are coastal-pelagic, semi-oceanic sharks occurring over continental and insular shelves and adjacent deep water, often approaching close inshore and entering enclosed bays and estuaries.

At certain times of the year, scalloped hammerheads swim in schools of several hundred animals-unusual behavior for predators at the top of the food chain. This schooling pattern makes them easy prey for fishermen targeting large catches.
