Scarlet tanagers are wide spread throughout Michigan, but may be limited in some areas. These birds prefer larger (ten acres or more), mature (older) forests for nesting.
There is no mistaking the Scarlet Tanager (Piranga olivacea). This 7-inch bird is bright scarlet red with black wings and tail. Its winter plumage is yellow green. The female is olive green above and light yellow below.

Only five species migrate to North America; of these the scarlet tanager (Piranga olivacea) has the widest range in the United States. It is about 7 in. (18 cm) long.
The species most similar to the Summer Tanager in the East is the Scarlet Tanager. The Scarlet Tanager male is also red, but has black wings. The female Scarlet Tanager has a shorter bill, white wing linings, and more olive color on the upper parts.
Where range overlaps with Scarlet Tanager, the two species respond aggressively to each other's songs and countersing; coexist by partial habitat shift maintained by interspecific aggression.
The bright-red fruits are eaten by a great variety of birds when they ripen in the fall. Scarlet Tanagers, Cedar Waxwings, American Robins, and Eastern Bluebirds are especially fond of the fruits.

According to a literature review, it hybridizes with the flame-colored tanager (P. bidentata) in southeastern Arizona. Hybridization between western and scarlet tanager (P. olivacea) is uncertain [54].
