Appearance:
The Florida scrub-jay is a 12-inch-long, blue and gray crestless jay that lacks the white wing spots and tail feather tips of the more common and widespread blue jay.

The Western Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma california) is a non-migratory member of the Corvidae family found in scrub and dry woodlands of oaks and piƱon pine from Washington to Baja California.

This scrub-jay was listed as Threatened in 1987, but its 1999 recovery plan has been poorly implemented. Because Critical Habitat has not been designated, protection mechanisms are weak.

The Western Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma californica[A]), is a species of scrub-jay native to western North America. It ranges from southern Washington to central Texas and central Mexico.

These caches are defended against Western Scrub-Jays and other groups of Acorn Woodpeckers. Although populations have declined in surrounding urban areas, those on campus should persist if mature oaks remain available.
