Sea lions are any of seven species in six genera of modern pinnipeds including one extinct one (the Japanese sea lion).

Sea lions are large, ranging from around 150 kg to over 1,500 kg, and males tend to be much larger than females (called sexual dimorphism). Their bodies are slender and elongate. Small, cartilaginous, external ears are present. All otariids have fur.

SEA LION & MAN
In the early nineteenth century, large numbers of sea lions were killed on the coasts of California. The blubber of the dead animals was used as a source of oil, and the skins were used for making glue.

Sea lions are adapted for movement on land as well as in the water. Wing-like front flippers have a bone structure similar to that in our arms and hands. Swimming with these flippers propels the sea lion forward, while the hind flippers steer.

Sea lion populations in the Gulf of Alaska are dwindling because their prey is declining as commercial fisheries increase their take. Gunshots and net entanglement are also to blame for sea lion deaths.

Sea Lions prefer sandy beaches, usually in isolated bays and sheltered areas. One such site on Kangaroo Island off South Australia has become a popular tourist attraction.

The sea lion's ancient ancestors, like those of whales and dolphins, lived on land. The modern animal is well adapted to an aquatic environment, with its streamlined body and powerful flippers.

California sea lions vary greatly in size depending on the gender of the animal. Females weigh only 200 pounds, whereas males weigh 3 times as much. Both males and females tend to have a dark brown coat, but females often have a slightly lighter coat.

California sea lions separate their nursing and feeding activities. They nurse their pups for 1 to 2 days and then leave the pup ashore while they travel to feeding areas at sea. They spend 2 to 5 days feeding and then return to nurse the pup.

The California sea lion is probably the most commonly seen pinniped along our coast. It has distinct external ears, large eyes, and elongated front flippers. Its hind flippers can be turned forward under its body, allowing it to walk on land.

Unlike sea lions and eared seals which use their fore flippers for propulsion, harp seals use their hind flippers in a side-to-side action to propel themselves through the water.

Hunting in the Water Some carnivores, like the seal and the sea lion, spend a lot of time hunting in the water. Sea lions, walruses and seals are pinnipeds, which means "fin feet." Pinnipeds are adapted for hunting in the water.

Discussion The Great White Shark (officially called just the White Shark) feeds on a variety of fish, including other sharks, as well as sea lions, birds, sea otters, sea turtles, carrion, and, occasionally, undigestible garbage.

Sea lions in California have been observed biting off these fins and tossing the fish around like a Frisbee. Scientists wonder if the sea lions do this in order to soften the fish's tough, sandpapery skin before eating it.

The white shark is usually a solitary hunter, feeding primarily on seals, dophins, large fish, and sea lions. White sharks occasionally attack humans and as a result have earned the infamous reputation of 'man-eaters'.

Scientists also tell us that sharks rarely target people as prey and that when a shark does injure a human, it is often because it has mistaken that person for a seal, a sea lion or one of its usual prey animals.

The harbor seal cannot walk on all four limbs like a sea lion. It moves awkwardly on land, but is well-suited for the water environment.
One way to tell a seal from a sea lion is that the seal has no visible ear flaps.
