Sea turtles are one of the Earth's most ancient creatures. The seven species found today became distinct from all other turtles at least 110 million years ago.

 


Sea turtles (Chelonioidea) are turtles found in all the world's oceans with the exception of the Arctic Ocean, and some species travel between oceans.

Sea turtles are still found in all the warm waters of the earth. Ocean life has given them all some common characteristics. All species have legs modified into efficient swimming flippers.

FOOD:
Sea turtles eat jellyfish, seaweed, crabs, shrimp, snails, algae and mollusks.
BEHAVIOR:
Sea turtles spend most of their time in the water. When they do come to the shore, to lay eggs, for example, traveling on land is awkward.

Green Sea Turtle: Chelonia mydas
Appearance:
Its name describes the color of its body fat, not its carapace (top shell), which is smooth and colored light to dark brown with dark mottling.

Sea turtles spend almost all their lives submerged but must breathe air for the oxygen needed to meet the demands of vigorous activity. With a single explosive exhalation and rapid inhalation, sea turtles can quickly replace the air in their lungs.

Marine turtles (family Cheloniidae) and leatherback sea turtles (family Dermochelyidae) spend all of their lives a sea except for females who briefly go ashore at night to lay their eggs.

Sea turtles are characterized by a long, streamlined shell. Depending on the species, sea turtles color range can be olive-green, yellow, greenish-brown, reddish-brown, or black. Limbs and flippers are adapted for swimming.

Green Sea Turtles range throughout the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans primarily in the tropical regions. During the day, Green Sea Turtles feed in the seagrass beds that grow in shallow waters.

The sea turtle, a symbol of long life and good luck, has been loved for centuries. The Loggerhead Turtle, belonging to the sea turtle family, makes its home in the seas of tropical and temperate regions.

This sea turtle visits Delaware Bay in summer and fall. It is the most common turtle in U.S. waters, inhabiting warm, nearshore regions of the Atlantic Ocean. Its major nesting beaches in the United States are in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

Green sea turtles are listed as threatened or endangered throughout their habitat.

The green sea turtle is not named for its external colour, but for the greenish colour of its body fat! Populations of the green turtle have been steadily declining and the species is now considered threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

Food items include squid, fish, skates, rays, sharks, sea turtles, sea birds, seals, sea lions, walrus, dolphins, porpoises, and large whales such as fin whales, humpback whales, right whales, minke whales, and gray whales.

The Loggerhead Turtle is a large sea turtle to 1.5 m in length. The shell is an elongated heart-shape, dark brown above and white, cream or yellowish below. The large head is dark brown on top becoming pale at the sides, with darker blotches.

They have been known to eat birds, sea turtles, penguins, seals, porpoises, and large baleen whales. More commonly, orcas can be seen eating fish such as salmon and cod, and squid.

This hawk is an active and versatile predator, feeding on invertebrates, small lizards, snakes, rodents, hatchling tortoises and sea turtles as well as the marine iguanas found on the Galapagos Islands.

Threats to Survival
: Predators include sea turtles, ocean sunfish, spade fish, tuna, swordfish, and other large fish. Humans, particularly in some Asian countries, capture and eat dried non-venomous jellyfish.

Killer whales eat fish, squid, sea turtles, sea birds, and other marine mammals including seals and dolphins. Packs of killer whales are capable of killing and eating a blue whale.

Don't buy products which have been made from sea turtle parts. Guitars, ashtrays, jewellry and other products made from sea turtles are sold to tourists around the world.

The Kemp's Ridley is the smallest of the sea turtles, with the weight of an adult generally being less than 45 kg (100 lb.) and the straight-line carapace length around 65 cm (26 in.).

Five of these species are sea turtles and one (the Eastern Box Turtle) is primarily terrestrial. The rest are semi-aquatic, inhabiting North Carolina's ponds, wetlands, and other water bodies.
