Sea urchins
Sea urchins are a class of marine animals that live on the seabed or burrow into the sand. Those that live on rocky seabeds are spherical and have prominent, protective spines.

Sea urchins are typically six to twelve centimeters in length and spherical in shape, although flattening can occur along the oral-arboral axis. Sea urchins use their spines for defense, prey capture, and locomotion.

Red sea urchins are colourful creatures varying from red to dark burgundy that crawl along the sea floor using their spine as stilts. They have spherical bodies, which are inside a hard shell completely covered by many sharp spines.

Sea Urchins Sea urchins are related to starfish and like starfish they are divided into five parts and covered with spines. On some species the spines are venomous.

Fossils of one major deuterostome group, the echinoderms (whose modern members include starfish, sea urchins and crinoids) are quite common from the start of the Cambrian, 542 million years ago.

Sea otters mainly eat sea urchins, crabs, clams, mussels, octopus, other marine invertebrates, and fish. In order to capture food, sea otters dive to the bottom in 5 to 250 feet of water.

Habits: Adults feed on fish, gastropods, echinoderms (sea urchins), and in particular, sponges. A throat lined with spines aids in digestion of sponges.

Boring sea urchins tunnel in 11cm (5.5 inches) and sit at the entrance to feed. Long spined black sea urchins scrape the reef for algae and other food.

They play a major role in the community by controling of herbivorous invertebrates, mainly the sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus sp.), inhabiting kelp forests. Sea urchins graze on kelp.

This has stirred controversy where their predation on abalone, crabs, clams, and sea urchins affects shellfisheries.

They eat a wide variety of invertebrates, including clams, snails, worms, sea stars, sea urchins, crabs, squid, octopuses, and abalone. Alaskan sea otters also eat fish.

Breeding
the female can lay over 100 eggs. She comes ashore onto the beach, digs a hole in the sand to lay the eggs, then covers them with sand using her flippers.

The bird’s omnivorous diet includes squid, clams, mussels, sea urchins, eggs, chicks, adult birds, zooplankton, and small fish like anchovy, whiting, eel, and rockfish. Other oceanic species use the Western Gull to find prey.

Sea cucumbers are echinoderms-like starfish and sea urchins. There are some 1,250 known species, and many of these animals are indeed shaped like soft-bodied cucumbers.

spiny lobsters, shrimps, crabs, sea urchins, squids, octopuses, marine snails and bivalves) and benthic fish (i.e. sea catfishes, mullets, puffers and stingrays).

If you can’t spot the baby bangaiis, look closely among the spines of a large sea urchin in the Hiding exhibit on Level three. Hiding comes naturally to these fish.

Feeding takes place mainly in the early morning and evening, with sea urchins, crabs, abalones and other shellfish being the main items on the menu, although fish and octopus are also eaten occasionally.

Humphead wrasse feed primarily on molluscs, fish, sea urchins, crustaceans, echinoderms, and other invertebrates, using their strong teeth. The species may be one of the few predators of the toxic crown of thorns starfish, boxfish and sea hares.

It should also be noted that after a massive die-out of the sea urchins in the Caribbeans, parrotfish now are the main grazers in the area, the most common of which are Sparisoma viride and Scarus iseri. (Mumby and Wabnitz 2001) ...

Omnivore. They eat almost anything including sea urchins, algae, corals, mollusks, crabs, tunicates, and other fish.
Predators and Threats
Sharks, dolphins, large fish, and humans.

Nurse sharks eat bottom-dwelling fish, shrimp, squid, octopus, crabs, sea snails, lobster, sea urchins, and coral.

ARTHROPODS

Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on a wide variety of food items including fish, crustaceans, squid, sea urchins, eggs, small birds and mammals, and occasionally plant material. Will also sometimes scavenge for trash and garbage and dumps and other sites.

Discussion In North American waters, the Nurse Shark is most abundant off the coasts of southern Florida. Small fishes, sea urchins, and a variety of crustaceans, including spiny lobsters, make up its diet.

Common starfish feed on mussels, crustaceans, worms and echinoderms (starfish or sea urchins).

Behaviour
Starfish are propelled very slowly along the sea floor by their tiny tube feet.

This turtle is mainly vegetarian, but shellfish and sea urchins are reported to be in its diet. The population of this overexploited species has been seriously depleted.

Bait: Clam, cut bait. small crabs, sea worms, starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins and occasionally squid.

The sea otter, found in and near kelp beds in the North Pacific, is a larger heavier animal of the same family which habitually swims on its back. While in this position it carries its catch and eats some its meals of abalone, crab, and sea urchin.

Invertebrates are creatures that do not have a backbone. In Antarctic waters there are large quantities of squid, cuttlefish, octopus, marine snails, limpets, sponges, sea stars, sea squirts, sea anemones, sea urchins, jellyfish and many others.

Adults demonstratively defensive at nest; often perform distraction display. Protective cover is critical factor in selection of nest site. Drops sea urchins from heights onto beach to crack. Adult plumage attained in third year.

Otters use small rocks or other shellfish to pry prey from rocks and to hammer or pry open their food. They can dive up to 180 feet when foraging for food. Their favorite foods include sea urchins, abalone, mussels, clams, crabs, and snails.

On a good low tide, you will have a chance to see sea urchins and brittle stars, or an octopus if you are lucky. Don't forget that you are one of thousands of people who visit this beach; do your part to protect the marine life.

Thousands of nesting females crawl ashore each year on the beaches of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. The loggerhead is primarily a carnivore. Its diet includes crabs, shrimp, whelks, conches, fish, clams, jellyfish, sea urchins and even ...
