The Semipalmated Plover is the most common of the small plovers that migrate through the state. The name "Semipalmated" refers to the partial webbing found between the bird's toes.

The semipalmated plover eats insects like grasshoppers, mosquitoes and locusts. It also eats crustaceans and mollusks.

The Semipalmated Plover is similar but has only one black bar across the chest.

In all plumages, the similarly-sized Semipalmated Plover has a complete breast band. Piping Plover is quite similar but in alternate plumage has an orange-based bill and different black patterning on the face.

The Piping Plover is similar to the Snowy Plover and the Semipalmated Plover.

The less common Snowy Plover and Wilson's Plover are also residents, both found along the coasts. Migrant plovers include the Lesser-Golden Plover, the Semipalmated Plover, and the Piping Plover.

Nonbreeding adults of both species have a brown breast band. The species' heavier black bill and larger body distinguish it from the similar-looking Snowy, Piping, and Semipalmated Plovers, which all share its habitat.
