The name shearwater is applied to that sub-division of the Procellariidae (petrel) family whose members have a skimming flight pattern, a flap and rapid glide, close to the surface of the sea.

The Balearic shearwater returns to land from late September and will breed from February through to June (2).

Shearwaters are medium-sized long-winged seabirds. There are more than 30 species of shearwaters, a few larger ones in the genus Calonectris and many smaller species in the genus Puffinus.

Shearwaters, fulmars and petrels make up this family. These birds are gull-sized with long wings.

Lowland Copperheads have also been recorded utilizing shearwater burrows on The Nut at Stanley and on islands. Copperheads eat a variety of prey, typically feeding on lizards and frogs.

This commensal relationship between the salmon and the birds is noted to be especially strong in such species as the White-fronted Tern, Sterna striata, Fluttering Shearwater, Puffinus gavia, and Buller's Shearwater, Puffinus bulleri.
