Softshell turtles (family Trionychidae) have soft, leathery shells, webbed feet, and long snouts that they extend to the surface of the water. They also burrow into the mud and extend their snouts to the surface to breathe.

The shell is thin, flexible and highly coloured with elaborate patterns. The carapace of the hawksbill is unusual amongst the marine turtles as the scutes (the hard, bony plates that constitute the shell) are overlapping.

Soft-shell turtles can be seen in southwestern Quebec and southwestern Ontario. There are more in the United States with some seen as far south as Texas and New Mexico.

Because their feet have evolved into flippers, sea turtles are able to swim long distances.

The shell, or "carapace", of the gopher tortoise is mostly brownish gray and the underside of the shell, or "plastron", is yellowish tan. Their front legs are shovel-like which helps them when digging their burrows.
