A small shore bird common, in fact often abundant, on passage and in winter, it breeds in the High Arctic. So far to the north, in fact, that only very few ornithologists have ever seen it on its nesting site.

The annual South Shore Bird Club whale watch from Plymouth
was held on Saturday, July 12th. As with any whale watch trip,
we were at the mercy of the whale activity.
This year, the whale activity was found well before Stellwagen Bank.

While incubating, they are subject to predation by shore birds and sand-dwelling invertebrates. Under normal conditions, they do not have an opportunity to hatch until the next tide series high enough to reach them, in 10 or more days.

In drier weather this is one of the first ponds to dry up, exposing good shore bird habitat, and in wetter seasons it floods into the horse paddock on the other side of Swenson road.

Flamingos owe their peculiar looks to their feeding habits. Their elongated body, neck and legs allow them to wade into much deeper water than most shore birds, thereby expanding their food choices. (They can even swim, if necessary.) ...

Because of their highly selective feeding area they are more susceptible to human activity than most shore birds. Disregarded or entangled fishing line is particularly lethal to oystercatchers as they easily become entangled in it.

Juveniles will take a wide variety of small prey such as insects, shellfish and small fish. Adult saltwater crocodiles will take dingos, wallabies, shore birds, other crocodiles, large reptiles, domestic animals, cattle and even people.

In addition, the eggs of the horseshoe crab are an important part of the food web along the Atlantic coast as they provide food for many shore bird communities.
