Sifakas are lemurs. Local Malagasy people named them for the unique call they send echoing through Madagascar's forests, which sounds like shif-auk.

With a 'shi-fak' call echoing throughout the forests of Madagascar, it's little wonder the local people named this group of lemurs the sifaka.
Saving Sifakas
Like many other types of sifaka, the Coquerel's sifaka is in danger of extinction in the wild. These animals suffer from continued habitat loss, as their forest homes are logged for timber and turned into farmland.
Sifaka differ from other lemurs in the way they move, using a form of locomotion called vertical clinging and leaping.

Usually a troupe of Coquerel's Sifakas pass through the garden at about this time as part of their afternoon meal circuit. A pond fills the middle of the garden area, and these small frogs fill the pond.
Some lemurs, such as the indri, produce loud wailing calls to mark their territory while the sifaka defines its home range with "shi-fak" calls that sound like hiccups. Lemurs are endangered due to deforestation.
