Sika Deer*
Order Artiodactyla : Family Cervidae : Cervus nippon Temminck ...

Sika deer are excellent swimmers, readily taking to water to escape predators. Surprisingly, this woodland deer is more than capable of swimming up to 12km in the sea.

Sika deer are gregarious, traveling in herds. They are normally diurnal. The rut of the northern subspecies is in November and December. The males then cry with high notes which often change into piercing sounds.

Not only the leopards themselves, but also important prey species, such as roe deer, sika deer and hare, were hunted by the villagers. As a consequence of poaching, leopards often look for other prey and regularly visit deer farms at the forest edge.

In the wild, the primary prey of the Amur leopard is roe and sika deer, hares and badgers. At the Zoo, they are fed a diet that includes a commercial meat mix, solid beef and bones; the diet is formulated to meet the nutritional needs of each animal.

Humans are their main predators: Trophy hunters seek to kill the leopards for their beautiful spotted fur coats, while subsistence hunters find the cats a nuisance as they compete for sika deer and other prey.
