Prey species include squid, herring, smelt and silver hake, as well as shrimp. Recently, one Atlantic white-sided dolphin was seen getting trapped in a fishing net.
Small striped bass are eaten by other fish such as Atlantic tomcod, Atlantic cod, silver hake and larger striped bass. Adult striped bass have few predators except humans.
Baits: metal squids, spoons, plugs, jigs, rigged eels, plastic eels and fish, shrimp and small fish, alewives, flounder, sea herring, menhaden, sand lance, silver hake, smelt, silversides, as well as lobsters, crabs, soft clams, small mussels, ...
There are local variations in the use of "hake" as a name; in America the "silver hake" (Merluccius bilinearis), sometimes called "whiting," and "Pacific hake" (Merluccius productus) are also food -fishes of inferior quality.
