common name for small shore fishes, belonging to the family Antherinidae, abundant in the warmer waters of the Atlantic and Pacific, and named for the silvery stripe on either side of the body.

 


Grunion were originally classified in Atherinidae, the family of silversides, but are now classified in the family Atherinopsidae, along with the other New World silversides, including the jacksmelt and topsmelt.

The diet of Atlantic mackerel consists of amphipods, euphausids, shrimps, crab larvae, small squid, fish eggs, and small fishes such as capelin, Atlantic silversides, young herring, smelt and mackerel.

Yellow-eyed penguins, Megadyptes antipodes, feed on small fish such as blue cod, red cod, and silversides and cephalopods such as arrow squid. This species forages during the day and returns to its coastal home at night as far as 1 km inland.
