The Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger) is a widespread bird of the coastlines of the United States as well as much of Central and South America. The species also goes up major rivers away from the coasts in some areas.

Skimmers
Black Skimmers are primarily found along the coasts but may also be found at inland lakes. They forage by skimming the surface of calm saltwater marshes and estuaries with their lower bill open as they fly over.

The Black Skimmer is an unique bird to witness along the Assateague Channel and is one of the three skimmer species. The Black Skimmer is considered as a threatened species in Maryland.

Other methods include absorbents (typically these just absorb the oil and do little or no damage to the environment), oil booms which trap the oil in a confined space and oil skimmers which skim the oil from the surface.

Right Whales are slow, skimmer-feeders. Their baleen plates, up to 2 metres long, filter out plankton and krill (small shrimp-like crustaceans) as they cruise along the surface. They seldom reach a speed of 9km/hr.

Being strictly surface skimmers, they generally only immerse their bill but sometimes they do immerse their entire head. They have been known to take eggs from other nests and prey on the young of other frigatebirds.
