The Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is a common and widespread mammal over most of the United States and Canada. Striped Skunks feed on fruits, berries, eggs, rodents, and many other items including carrion.

Skunks are more of a pest then anything else. Their bad smell actually comes from their Urine and is used to scare off everything except other skunks. Skunks are often attracted to residential areas by the availability of food, water and shelter.

Skunks use scent marking to communicate presence and reproductive state to other skunks. They also communicate visually, by raising their fur and changing posture. Skunks have a good sense of hearing, but their vision is poor.

Skunks are intelligent and usually good natured. Despite their gentle manner, skunks can be deadly simply because they are often carriers of rabies. In fact, rabies is more common in striped skunks than in any other Minnesota mammal.

Striped skunks are one of the most distinctive animals of North America. Faced with grave danger the skunk will turn around, raise its tail and squirt a fluid from two scent glands.
