The California Slender Salamander (Batrachoseps attenuatus) was originally described in 1833 by Eschscholtz as Salamandrina attenuata. See Amphibian Species of the World.

These small, slender salamanders are the most common woodland salamanders in West Virginia. They usually have a straight-edged red to gray dorsal stripe. Some specimens lack the dorsal stripe and are referred to as the lead-backed morph.

California Slender Salamander - Batrachoseps attenuatus. This is the most frequently observed amphibian on the preserve. A total of 68 individuals were seen, and it was the only species noted on every site visit.

Description: The many-lined salamander is a small, slender salamander that has a distinctive small head and short tail. The overall color of the back tends to be dull yellow to brown while the belly is yellow with a few scattered dark spots.

Description: This small, slender salamander is orange to grayish brown above, sometimes with small black and bluish speckles on the sides.

Characteristics The blue-spotted salamander is a slender salamander three to five inches in length, with a long tail. It is gray to blue-black with blue spots on its sides, tail and legs. Its belly is lighter than its back.

Description: The seepage salamander is an especially small, slender salamander with a yellow to reddish-brown dorsal stripe. This species often has a light circular mark on the top of each thigh and a Y-shaped mark on the top of the head.

But most, like the arboreal salamander Aneides lugubris and the California slender salamander Batrachoseps attenuatus, don't have lungs or gills as adults.

An Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander (Desmognathus ochrophaeus) weighing just over a gram reproduced on only 12 mealworms/year (Fitzpatrick 1973a, cited in [37]), and 74% of slender salamanders (Batrachoseps spp.) kept at room temperature survived ...

Such strictly terrestrial forms are the red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus) and slimy salamander (P. glutinosus) of E United States and the slender salamander (Batrachoseps attenuatus) of the Pacific coast.
