Sloth
The Sloth is a slow-moving, nocturnal mammal that spends its entire life hanging upside-down in trees. This arboreal (tree-living) mammal is found in the tropical rain forests of South and Central America.

Sloth Aarboreal mammal of tropical America. The three toed sloth or ai (Bradypus) diets almost exclusively on leaves, buds, and stems of a tropical relative of the mulberry breed.

Sloths spend almost their entire lifespan hanging upside down from a tree limb. They have developed many features that help them adapt to such a lifestyle such as very long, curved claws that help them grip onto the tree limbs.

Sloths are medium-sized South American mammals belonging to the families Megalonychidae and Bradypodidae, part of the order Pilosa. Most scientists call these two families the Folivora suborder, while some call it Phyllophaga.

Sloth bears are governed by the SSP (Species Survival Plan) program, which manages breeding in order to maintain a genetically diverse zoo population.

Sloth bear adults can weigh anywhere from 120-310 pounds and measure anywhere from 60-75 inches in length. The males are larger than the females.

SLOTH ANATOMY
Sloths have a thick brown (and slightly-greenish) fur coat. Sloths are about the size of a cat (roughly 2 feet = 61 cm long).

These shaggy-haired bears were originally classed as sloths. When feeding, they can be heard sucking up termites from many miles away.
Subspecies
Two subspecies.

Sloths are very unique in form and behavior and are designed for a life spent upside down. Their long guard hairs grow backwards from the belly to the back and have a special grooved structure that encourages algae growth.

Sloths have an extremely slow metabolism and have the lowest variable body temperature of any mammal.

Sloths are truly bizarre creatures, very high on the list of things I wanted to see most in Panama.

The Sloth has long gray or brown hair that blends in well with the surrounding environment, making it difficult for predators, such as the jaguar, to see them.

Ground sloths originated in South America and are distantly related to the living tree sloths of that continent. Jefferson's ground sloth first appeared during the second-last glaciation, perhaps 200 000 years ago.

Teeth: Sloths have primitive peg-like teeth. They do not have incisors or canine teeth. They have a total of ten upper and eight lower molars. These teeth lack enamel and grow continuously.

Two-Toed Sloths are mid-sized mammals ranging from 9 to 20 pounds in weight and 2 to 2.5 feet in length.

DIET Sloth bears feed extensively on termites and have special adaptations for doing this: The naked lips are capable of protruding, and the inner pair of upper incisors are missing, which forms a gap through which termites can be sucked.

The Linn's sloth is a very gentle animal. It has a white/tan face and the fur is black/dark brown. The fur is a little different than other animals. The fur flows from the front to the back of the animal. The fur is very fine.

Armadillos, sloths and anteaters are mammals.
Evolution:
Xenarthra are an ancient group of placental mammals that once roamed across Gondwanaland before the continents of the southern hemisphere separated into their present-day configuration.

The Maned 3-toed Sloth is a Brazilian endemic found in the Atlantic Rain Forest remnants in Bahia, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro.
