Smooth Dogfish Shark
The smooth dogfish has a slender body with an obvious spiracle behind the eye. The caudal fin has a rounded lower lobe and a larger top lobe.

The smooth dogfish, Mustelus canis, is a species of shark. This shark is an olive grey or brown, and may have shades of yellow or grayish white. Females live to 16 years and males have a life span of 10 years.

Discussion The Smooth Dogfish bears litters of four to 20 young. Feeding primarily on small fishes, crustaceans (including lobsters in northern waters), and other invertebrates, it does not attack humans.

Best known are the spiny dogfishes (family Squalidae) and the smooth dogfishes (family Triakidae). Spiny dogfishes have two spines, one in front of each dorsal fin, and lack an anal fin.

Hammerheads, the Requiem Sharks such as the Bull Shark and the Tiger Sharks, the Basking Shark and the Smooth Dogfish fall into this category. Dogfish have the longest known gestation period of any shark, at 18 to 24 months.
