The snow leopard, known and prized for its beautiful, thick fur, has a white, yellowish or soft gray coat with ringed spots of black on brown. The markings help camouflage it from prey.

Snow Leopard Characteristics
The snow leopard is classed as one of the moderate-sized "big cats," which, collectively, include lions, tigers, cheetahs, leopards, jaguars and other large felines--a world-wide total of three dozen species.

Saving Snow Leopards
Wild snow leopards are in serious trouble. It's been estimated that the wild population numbers only 4,500 to 7,500 animals.

Snow Leopard - Panthera uncia.
The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is a large species of cat that roams the mountain ranges of central and southern Asia. The snow leopard is well adapted for the cold temperatures of its high-altitude habitat.

Snow Leopards are solitary wild cats that live in the snowy central mountains of Asia. Snow Leopards are in danger of extinction due to loss of habitat, loss of prey, and over-hunting; few Snow Leopards are left in the wild.

The snow leopard is usually found above the tree line and permanent snow in central Asia's dry mountainous country.

Snow leopards have lived up to 15 years in captivity.

Consider rewarding a zoo with a visit if it keeps and breeds snow leopards, or cheetah. Cheetah have been kept by man for possibly two thousand years. Arabs, Abyssinians, and Mogul emperors used cheetah to hunt antelope.

A related species is the snow leopard, or ounce, Uncia uncia or P. uncia, which replaces ordinary leopards in the high mountains of Central Asia. It has long whitish fur and diffuse spotting.

The only other cat equal to it in jumping is the snow leopard. Its hunting method is 80% effective. When a female is in heat, as many as 5 males may court her, fighting among themselves as they do.

Habitat

One of the primary predators of the red panda is the snow leopard. However, it is usually safe when perched up in the smaller branches of a tree.

Family group: Maternal and bachelor herds.
Diet: Grasses, leaves and shoots of bushes and trees.
Main Predators: Wolf, snow leopard, lynx, wolverine, brown bear, fox, golden eagle, humans.
Distribution Alpine meadows and crags in Central Asia.

Lions and tigers are the largest cats, while leopards, snow leopards, jaguars, cheetahs, and pumas are medium-sized. The remaining cats are all small, weighing less than 50 pounds.

[88] A study on livestock predation taken in Tibet showed that the wolf was the most prominent predator, accounting for 60% of the total livestock losses, followed by the snow leopard (38%) and lynx (2%).

The main reason for the decline in their numbers is loss of habitat. There are probably only about 2500 adult red pandas left in the wild. Main threats are from snow leopards, martens and humans.

They hunt their prey in trees and along the ground, they feed on monkeys and other mammals as well as on birds and reptiles. At high altitudes in Tibet and the Himalayas is found the ounce or snow leopard.
