The Snowy Owl (Nyctea scandiaca) is an arctic nesting species that comes south into southern Canada and the northern United States during some winters. All the shots here were taken at Churchill, Manitoba.
Snowy Owls are nocturnal, but they hunt during the day. Their life cycle is intimately dependent on the abundance of lemmings, which form an important part of their food supply.

Snowy Owls breed in the high arctic tundra. Nests are no more than shallow depressions on a mound or gravel ban, supplemented with feathers and scraps of moss. Clutch size varies with prey abundance.

A total of 6 Snowy Owls were counted . One dead bird was found and another so weak it was captured and take to rehabilitation. Unfortunately that bird survived only 12 hours.
