In common with the soft-shelled turtles, the nasal region of this species is elongated, enabling the nose to be used as a snorkel. The Matamata will lurk quietly for long periods in shallow water, ready to pounce on passing prey.
In contrast, aquatic and soft-shelled turtles have lighter shells that help them avoid sinking in water and swim faster with more agility. These lighter shells have large spaces called fontanelles between the shell bones.
Just after hatching they are vulnerable to a wide array of predators, including soft-shelled turtles.
African Slender-snouted crocodiles are usually not found in groups except during the beginnings of the mating season.
Edible species include several marine turtles, the green turtle (traditional ingredient of turtle soup), the diamondback terrapin, and the soft-shelled turtles.
