Song Thrush
Unlike many correspondents, we continue to attract song thrushes to the garden. And early each morning under mild conditions we enjoy a dawn chorus of four, each in full song.

 


Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos)
The Song Thrush is smaller than the Mistle Thrush (Turdus viscivorus), has a shorter tail, "arrowhead" spots rather than round spots on its breast and has yellow-buff colouring on its upper breast.

The Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos) is a thrush that breeds across much of Eurasia. It is also known in English dialects as throstle or mavis. It has brown upperparts and black-spotted cream or buff underparts and has three recognised subspecies.

A song thrush perched high up in the willow tree at the bottom of the garden is busy shouting a celebration over his territory.

Competition from introduced European starlings, song thrushs and common blackbirds, overhunting and habitat loss through agricultural clearing might have played an important role.

Because of that, the beautiful girl covered herself in the black wool and prayed to God to turn her into a bird. The song thrush wanted to marry her, but the blackbird would turn into a reed, then into a flower, a cross, into a vine, ...

Possible competition for food resources from the introduced Blackbird and Song Thrush.

Fyffe I stopped at the Lavender Farm and birded around the garden: Spur-winged Plover, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Chaffinch, Pukeo (Purple Swamphen), Silvereyes,Tomtit, Dunnock.

On a farm fence I had flock of Redpolls.
