HABITAT: Southern flying squirrels prefer mature hardwood forests but are found in most forested habitats. Woodpecker holes are favored nesting sites for the southern flying squirrel, but they may build a summer nest of leaves, twigs, and bark.

SOUTHERN FLYING SQUIRREL
A flying squirrel does not fly in the true sense of the word. It does not have wings to power itself through the air like a bird.

The Southern Flying Squirrel, Glaucomys volans, is found in wooded areas statewide except the Keys. It is buff brown to gray with a white underside, large eyes, and a broad, flat 3.5-5" tail. It is 8-10" long.

Northern flying squirrels are about 8 inches (20 cm) long (plus a 6 inch (15 cm) long tail. Southern flying squirrels are smaller and more aggressive than Northern flying squirrels.
